You wake up feeling like you ran a marathon… in your sleep.
You cry over spilled milk, literally.
You stare at your phone wondering why you opened it.
And the world shrugs and says, “That’s just motherhood.”
But I want to say something different: This isn’t just exhaustion. This is your body asking for nourishment.
Postpartum Isn’t a Season. It’s a System in Recovery.
Most people think postpartum ends when the baby weight is gone or the six-week checkup clears you for “activity.”
But the truth?
Postpartum recovery can take 18–24 months, sometimes longer. Especially if you’re breastfeeding, not sleeping through the night, or carrying invisible loads like generational trauma, anxiety, or are solo parenting.
You’re not broken.
You’re rebuilding from the inside out—hormonally, emotionally, spiritually, and biologically.
And your body is whispering (or screaming):
Feed me. Replenish me. Don’t forget about me.
The Postnatal Five: Vitamins & Nutrients That Make a Difference
Let’s talk about what your body’s likely running low on, and why it matters.
1. Iron – Your Energy Tank Filler
Think of it like: gas for your engine
You lose a lot of iron during birth (hello blood loss), and if you’re breastfeeding, you’re still giving a lot of your nutrient stores away.
Low iron can look like:
Exhaustion that coffee won’t fix
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Feeling breathless after climbing stairs
Anxiety or restlessness without reason
Replenish it with: grass-fed beef, lentils, spinach, and high-quality iron supplements (look for “gentle” forms like iron bisglycinate if regular iron upsets your stomach).
2. Magnesium – The Calm-Down Mineral
Think of it like: the weighted blanket for your nervous system
Magnesium helps you sleep, reduces irritability, and supports muscle recovery (you know, from growing and birthing a whole human).
Low magnesium can look like:
Trouble falling or staying asleep
Feeling “on edge” or overwhelmed
Leg cramps or twitchy muscles
Sugar cravings (especially at night)
Replenish it with: pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate, leafy greens, or a magnesium glycinate supplement (this one is extra gentle and calming).
3. Omega-3s – Brain and Mood Food
Think of it like: WD-40 for your postpartum brain
Pregnancy and breastfeeding can drain your DHA stores, which are critical for mental clarity, mood regulation, and reducing inflammation.
Low omega-3s can look like:
Brain fog (you know the one—where you forget what day it is)
Mood swings or emotional volatility
Dry skin, brittle nails
Feeling like you’re living in a fog or disconnected
Replenish it with: salmon, sardines, chia/flax seeds, or an algae-based omega-3 supplement (especially great if you’re plant-based).
4. B Vitamins – Your Spark Plugs
Think of them like: the ignition switch in your body’s energy system
B vitamins help regulate your nervous system, support metabolism, and produce serotonin (your feel-good brain chemical). Stress eats up B vitamins like toddlers eat snacks—fast and constantly.
Low B vitamins can look like:
Crippling fatigue (even if you slept 7 hours)
Feeling “meh” about everything
Poor concentration or motivation
Sensitivity to light or sound
Replenish them with: eggs, avocado, legumes, leafy greens, or a methylated B-complex (look for “methylcobalamin” or “methylfolate” on the label for better absorption).
5. Choline – The Brain Builder
Think of it like: the forewoman at the construction site of your memory
Choline is essential for brain health, especially if you're nursing—it literally helps build your baby’s brain and support yours.
Low choline can look like:
Mental fogginess (“Why did I walk into this room again?”)
Feeling more emotionally reactive
Low motivation or drive
Replenish it with: egg yolks, chicken, tofu, broccoli, or a choline supplement (most prenatals don’t include enough!).
This Isn’t Just About Nutrition—It’s About Your Mental Health, Too
You can journal, affirm, and manifest your way through a lot—but if your body is running on empty, healing gets harder.
When your nervous system is under-resourced, it can’t regulate well.
When your hormones are out of whack, your moods ride rollercoasters.
When your brain is foggy, it’s not because you’re failing—it’s because you’re depleted.
So What Can You Do About It? (Without Overwhelming Your Whole Life)
Start small.
Choose one supplement. One food upgrade. One hydration habit.
Maybe it means starting your morning with lemon water. Maybe it’s finally buying those protein shakes so breakfast doesn’t feel like a battle.
Maybe it’s setting that little reminder to take your postnatal vitamins, even when the day gets away from you.
Whatever it is—let it be small. Let it be doable. Let it stick.
Healing isn’t built in leaps. It’s built in whispers.-
Eat something green + something protein-rich at every meal.
This doesn’t mean kale salads and grilled chicken on repeat.
It might be scrambled eggs and spinach on a tortilla.
It might be pasta with chickpeas and some broccoli tossed in.
Let it be messy, imperfect, and real. No shame. No food guilt.
Just tiny acts of self-respect on your plate. -
Prioritize warm, grounding foods.
Soups. Stews. Roasted veggies. Herbal teas.
Your nervous system doesn’t just want nutrition—it wants comfort it can chew.
Cold smoothies and crunchy snacks are fine, but when you're depleted, your body craves warmth, softness, and safety.
Let your meals feel like hugs. -
Ask for help.
Not just with the baby. Not just with dishes.
Ask for help with you.
With your emotions. Your body. Your sleep.
Let someone bring you food. Let someone text you a reminder.
Let support feel sacred, not selfish.
You’re not meant to do this alone, and you don’t have to prove anything. Join a space that sees all of you.
You deserve support that honors the mom and the human.
The body and the spirit.
The cycle breaker and the one still learning how.
Find a community, course, or coach that helps you return to yourself, not someone else’s version of “okay.” Healing isn’t extra. It’s essential. And it begins with being seen.
You Are Not a Machine. You Are a Garden.
You don’t need a bounce-back plan. You need sunlight, nourishment, rest, and support.
Your healing is not a luxury.
It’s not indulgent.
It’s the soil your family will grow in.
You’re not broken, Mama. You’re being rebuilt with wisdom.
